Skincare Layering Order: What Goes First?
Share
The right skincare layering order helps keep a routine simple. If you are wondering about skin care order, use cleanser first, lighter leave-on products next, moisturizer after that, and sunscreen last in the morning.
Step 1: Cleanse first
Start with clean skin so the products that follow can be spread evenly.
Step 2: Apply lightweight products
If you use a serum, follow its label. Watery products generally go before thicker creams, but product directions take priority.
Step 3: Moisturize
Apply moisturizer after treatment products. Give each layer a little time to settle if you notice pilling.
Step 4: Put sunscreen last in the morning
Apply broad-spectrum sunscreen after the rest of your skincare and before makeup. Do not dilute it by mixing it with other products.
Simple skincare routine order
- Cleanser
- Optional serum or treatment
- Moisturizer
- Sunscreen in the morning
What if products pill?
Use less product, let layers settle and simplify overlapping heavy formulas.
Do all skincare routines need many layers?
No. A basic routine can be just cleanser, moisturizer and sunscreen. See our simple skincare routine for beginners for the minimal version.
